The European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee has called on the Commission to tackle financial exclusion by drafting legislation to ensure that the 10% of EU citizens who currently do not have a bank account can get one. Amongst those who struggle to get bank accounts are students, the homeless, the poor, and people who have no credit record. MEPs believe legislation is needed ’because the banking industry tends to focus on commercially attractive consumers rather than providing simple payment account products.’
