Parliament’s Agriculture Committee has called for improvements in the welfare of animals being transported around Europe. MEPs not only want to see transport time cut to eight hours, but also want support for local slaughterhouses and meat processing plants, so as to reduce the need for long journeys. Concern was also voiced about the practice of taking animals to be slaughtered in another Member State in order to obtain a ’country of origin label’.
