Animal welfare

Over 35 million animals are transported between Member States, and to and from third countries, every year. Regulation (EC) 1/2005, concerning the protection of animals during transport and related operations, has been applied since January 2007. A Commission report on the Regulation finds that it has helped improve animal protection, but also highlights a number of problems, including  poor enforcement of the legislation and market distortions created by differing interpretations of the rules.
